Nigerian filmmaker Kaelo Iyizoba has made history at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival after his short film The Spectacular Death of Prisca received an Honourable Mention in the Short Cuts category for Best International Short Film. The recognition makes Iyizoba the first Nigerian filmmaker to receive the TIFF short film honour, according to Pulse and Nollywood Reporter, while the film was also the only African production in this year’s festival lineup. Directed by Iyizoba and led by Nollywood star Rita Dominic, The Spectacular Death of Prisca is a fever-dream homage to the Nigerian cinema of the 2000s, combining melodrama, comedy and action to explore family, identity and the expectations placed on women.
The TIFF recognition builds on a growing body of international recognition for Iyizoba, a Nigerian American filmmaker whose creative journey has included the 2022 Arthur Krim Memorial Award from Columbia University, a BAFTA Student Awards shortlist for Mr. Bold in 2023, Berlinale Talents, the Tyler Perry Dream Collective and Sundance Institute’s inaugural Cultural Impact Residency. The filmmaker has described The Spectacular Death of Prisca as a proof of concept for a larger feature he has been developing for several years, titled A Nollywood Story. Speaking about the project, Iyizoba said the short is “the tip of the iceberg”, with the planned feature expanding its exploration of grief, loss and self-discovery through a story rooted in what he calls the Nollyverse.
Beyond the award itself, Iyizoba’s TIFF appearance highlights the growing ability of Nigerian filmmakers to use international festival platforms to present stories that draw directly from local cinematic history without being confined to conventional expectations of African cinema. The filmmaker said he hopes the recognition will help create more space for Nigerian and African filmmakers to tell stories in their own styles and reach global audiences. For The Spectacular Death of Prisca, the TIFF honour could also strengthen the case for A Nollywood Story, with Iyizoba already seeking financing to turn the short’s proof of concept into a full-length production.
