Mozambique Appoints New Central Bank Governor as Chapo Reshapes Economic Leadership

Mozambique President Daniel Chapo has appointed Waldemar Fernando de Sousa as the new Governor of the Bank of Mozambique, replacing Rogério Zandamela, who led the central bank for a decade. Chapo also appointed Felisberto Dinis Navalha as Deputy Governor, with both officials scheduled to be sworn in on September 2 in Maputo, as reported by CNBC Africa.

De Sousa will chair the central bank’s board of directors and oversee its senior management and operations, while Navalha will serve on the board and assume the governor’s responsibilities when the governor is absent or incapacitated. The Bank of Mozambique plays a central role in maintaining monetary and financial stability, managing foreign assets, conducting monetary and exchange rate policy and supervising financial institutions.

The appointments come as Mozambique seeks to strengthen economic stability and attract investment amid significant opportunities in natural gas, mining and infrastructure. Zandamela had served as governor since August 2016, bringing extensive international financial experience to the role. The transition therefore marks an important change at the institution responsible for steering the country’s monetary policy.

For investors and businesses, the new leadership will be closely watched for its approach to inflation, the metical, interest rates and financial-sector stability. De Sousa’s ability to maintain policy credibility while supporting Mozambique’s broader economic ambitions will be central to the bank’s next chapter.
