Kenya has signed a $1.2 billion agreement with a Chinese construction firm to undertake a major expansion and modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, reinforcing the country’s ambition to strengthen its position as East Africa’s leading aviation and logistics hub. As reported by Reuters, the project is expected to significantly increase passenger capacity, improve cargo-handling capabilities, and upgrade critical airport infrastructure to accommodate growing regional and international air traffic.
Under the agreement, the Chinese contractor will construct a new passenger terminal, expand existing facilities, modernize runways and taxiways, and enhance cargo operations. Citizen Digital stated that the investment forms part of a broader strategy to support tourism, trade, and economic growth while addressing capacity constraints at the country’s busiest airport. According to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), JKIA currently handles millions of passengers annually and serves as a key gateway connecting Africa to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
The deal comes amid increasing investment in aviation infrastructure across Africa as governments seek to capitalize on rising passenger demand and the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Officials from Kenya’s Ministry of Transport noted that improved airport infrastructure will help facilitate trade, attract investment, and strengthen the country’s competitiveness as a regional business destination. The expansion is also expected to create jobs during both the construction and operational phases of the project.
For investors and the aviation sector, the agreement represents another vote of confidence in Kenya’s long-term economic prospects. Analysts cited by Reuters say the upgraded airport could boost tourism revenues, improve cargo logistics, and support Nairobi’s emergence as a premier regional aviation hub. As air travel demand continues to recover and expand across Africa, strategic infrastructure projects such as the JKIA expansion are expected to play a critical role in unlocking future growth and regional connectivity.
