Amazon launches Prime in South Africa for under $4 a month

Amazon has launched its Prime subscription service in South Africa according to Reuters, offering customers access to faster deliveries, entertainment content, exclusive shopping deals, and gaming benefits for just 59 rand ($3.61) per month or 399 rand annually. The move marks a significant expansion of Amazon’s presence in Africa’s most industrialised economy.

The membership includes unlimited same-day and next-day delivery on eligible products, access to Prime Video, exclusive Prime Day promotions, and cloud gaming through Amazon Luna. South African customers can also access a 30-day free trial before subscribing.

According to Amazon’s Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director Robert Koen, the launch represents the next stage of the company’s growth in South Africa following the rollout of its local marketplace. The company said Prime is designed to combine shopping convenience, savings, and entertainment in a single membership package.

The launch also means South African subscribers will participate in Prime Day for the first time, with the 2026 event scheduled for June 23–29. Industry analysts say the competitive pricing could help Amazon attract a broad customer base as it competes for a larger share of South Africa’s fast-growing e-commerce and digital entertainment markets.
