A major public sector union in South Africa is calling for a return to remote working arrangements to cushion workers from the financial strain of imminent fuel price hikes, as pressure mounts on household incomes, according to News24.
The union argues that allowing employees to work from home would reduce commuting costs and ease demand for fuel, offering immediate relief at a time when petrol and diesel prices are expected to rise sharply due to global oil market pressures.
The call comes amid projections of significant increases at the pump, with estimates suggesting motorists could face monthly cost hikes of several hundred rand, alongside broader knock-on effects on food, transport, and electricity prices, CNBC Africa reported.
However, authorities have clarified that remote work is not currently an official government policy, noting that while it may be considered by employers and individuals, it has not been adopted as a nationwide directive.
