British Miner Uncovers Graphite Deposit in Uganda Amid US–China EV Battery Minerals Race

Blencowe Resources, a British mining firm, has discovered a significant graphite deposit at its Orom‑Cross project in Uganda, highlighting the country’s growing role in supplying critical minerals for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, Business Insider Africa reported.

The new zone, called Iyan, expands the project’s estimated graphite resources by about 66 percent, adding a third resource area to the development. Early exploration indicates the deposit could contain roughly 16.9 million tonnes of graphite-bearing material, a key component for EV battery anodes and other high-technology applications.

For Uganda, the discovery is expected to attract investment, create jobs, boost infrastructure, and generate export revenue once production begins. Graphite demand is rising sharply worldwide due to its essential role in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, mobile devices, and energy storage systems.

Strategically, the find comes amid competition between the United States and China, both seeking to secure alternative sources of critical minerals outside China’s dominant supply network. Blencowe’s discovery positions Uganda as a potentially reliable supplier for global manufacturers aiming to diversify graphite sources.
