Tunisia Plans $1 Billion Expansion of Tunis-Carthage Airport to Quadruple Capacity

Tunisia is planning a $1 billion expansion of Tunis-Carthage International Airport to significantly boost passenger capacity and modernize the country’s aviation infrastructure. The project aims to increase the airport’s annual handling capacity from about 5 million passengers to roughly 18.5 million by 2031, nearly quadrupling its current level, according to the Tunisian Transport Ministry, as reported by SABCNews.

The expansion, estimated at around 3 billion Tunisian dinars ($1 billion), has been included in the 2026 investment programme of the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports, the state agency responsible for managing the country’s airport infrastructure. MarketScreener said the government has put on hold plans to build a new airport and instead opted to expand and upgrade the existing facility, which serves as Tunisia’s primary international gateway.

Authorities believe the upgrade will strengthen Tunisia’s aviation capacity, support the recovery and growth of the tourism sector, and enhance the position of Tunis as a regional travel hub in North Africa, according to Nairametrics.
