324‑Year‑Old South African Wine Farm Linked to Tokyo Sexwale Goes on Auction for $11 Million

Bloemendal Wine Estate, one of South Africa’s oldest and most historic vineyards, has been placed on the auction block with a minimum asking price of R180 million (around $11 million), according to Business Insider Africa. The sale is scheduled for March 25 in Durbanville, in the heart of the Cape Winelands.

The 238‑hectare estate, dating back more than 300 years, originally supplied fresh produce to ships of the Dutch East India Company. Today, it operates as a fully functioning vineyard and hospitality business, featuring a winery, tasting rooms, manor house, restaurants, stables, and conference facilities.

The estate has historic ties to Tokyo Sexwale, the anti-apartheid activist and former Gauteng premier, who developed a diversified business portfolio following his political career. The current owner has not been publicly disclosed.

Auction terms require prospective buyers to provide proof of funds of at least R200 million and pay a non-refundable 5 percent deposit once an offer is accepted. The Herald notes that beyond its established wine operations, the property offers potential for mixed residential and commercial development due to its size and prime location.
