Nigeria’s Flamingos have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Morocco. Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan secured the victory for the Nigerian side, extending their campaign and keeping their hopes of winning a maiden world title alive. The victory also marked another important milestone for the young team as they continue their pursuit of a historic finish at the tournament, according to ChannelsTv.
Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, capitalising on a defensive error to put Nigeria ahead before half-time. The Flamingos maintained their attacking momentum after the break, with Dunstan doubling their advantage in the 71st minute following a partially cleared cross from Kanyinsola Yusuf. Mexico attempted a late comeback when Emily Delgado scored in the 90th minute of stoppage time, but Nigeria held firm to secure qualification. Umejiaku was subsequently named Player of the Match by FIFA for her decisive contribution.
The Flamingos will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. Venezuela reached the last eight after defeating Germany, setting up another demanding contest for Nigeria. Having claimed bronze at the 2022 edition in India, the Flamingos will be looking to build on their latest victory and secure another semi-final appearance as they pursue their first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
