Turkey and Ethiopia Sign Energy Cooperation Accord During Erdoğan Visit

Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abiy Ahmed oversaw the signing of a new energy cooperation agreement in Addis Ababa during Erdoğan’s official visit to Ethiopia, marking a renewed push to deepen economic ties between the two countries, as reported by Reuters.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar and Ethiopia’s Minister of Water and Energy Habtamu Itefa. According to TurkiyeToday, the accord outlines a framework for collaboration in renewable energy, electricity generation, energy efficiency and the development of hydroelectric infrastructure, including equipment production and installation.

The visit, Erdoğan’s first to Ethiopia in more than a decade, comes as Ankara expands its diplomatic and commercial engagement across the Horn of Africa. Turkish officials have described the agreement as part of broader efforts to strengthen long term cooperation in trade, infrastructure and strategic investment.

The deal signals both governments’ intention to formalise and scale up energy partnerships at a time when Ethiopia is pursuing ambitious power generation targets and Turkey continues to position itself as a key economic partner on the African continent.
