Toyota to Invest $3.6 Billion in Texas, Shift Tacoma Production From Mexico

Toyota Motor will invest $3.6 billion to expand its manufacturing operations in Texas, shifting part of its Tacoma pickup truck production from Mexico to the United States in one of the automaker’s largest North American investments in recent years. According to Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, the Japanese automaker will build a new 2.5-million-square-foot assembly facility at its San Antonio manufacturing campus, creating approximately 2,000 new jobs when production begins by 2030. The move comes amid increasing pressure to expand U.S. manufacturing and follows changes in the North American trade landscape.

The new facility will relocate Tacoma production from Toyota Manufacturing Baja California in Mexico to Texas, while the company will continue producing the popular midsize pickup truck at its Guanajuato plant in central Mexico. Toyota already manufactures the Tundra pickup and Sequoia SUV in San Antonio, where a new rear axle plant is also scheduled to begin operations later this year. In a statement, Toyota Motor North America said the investment reflects its confidence in the region’s workforce, innovation, and long-term manufacturing potential while reaffirming its commitment to operations across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The announcement comes as global automakers reassess production strategies in response to evolving U.S. trade policies, tariffs, and supply chain considerations. Industry analysts note that relocating part of Tacoma production closer to its largest market will reduce logistics costs and strengthen Toyota’s domestic manufacturing footprint while preserving its integrated North American production network. Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed that the project will receive state incentives, including a $20 million grant through the Texas Enterprise Fund, alongside local support for infrastructure and workforce development.

For the global automotive industry, Toyota’s investment highlights the growing trend of manufacturers expanding production within the United States while maintaining regional supply chains across North America. Analysts say the expansion will enhance Toyota’s production capacity, strengthen its competitiveness in the highly profitable pickup truck market, and reinforce Texas’ position as one of the leading automotive manufacturing hubs in the United States.
