Tanzania Names New Prime Minister After Disputed Election

Tanzania has appointed Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba as the country’s new Prime Minister, following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s contested re-election in late October. The appointment was confirmed on 13 November in Dodoma after a parliamentary vote that strongly backed Nchemba’s nomination, as reported by Reuters. The move comes at a sensitive moment for the country as political tensions linger over an election the opposition has described as deeply flawed.

Nchemba’s selection answers the immediate question of who will steer government operations after the disputed poll, which saw Hassan returned to office with a wide margin. Parliamentary Speaker Tulia Ackson announced the confirmation, highlighting that Nchemba, a former finance minister and long-serving CCM legislator, was the president’s preferred candidate. Reuters coverage of the confirmation noted that the ruling party’s majority ensured a swift approval process.

Speaking shortly after the vote, Nchemba said his priority would be restoring public confidence in the government’s economic and administrative systems. “This appointment is a call to rebuild trust and deliver stability at a time when citizens expect accountability and progress,” he said. He added that job creation and fiscal discipline would remain central to his policy approach.

The decision to appoint Nchemba is viewed as an effort to consolidate leadership and maintain economic continuity despite political frictions. Analysts highlighted in Reuters reports noted that Tanzania’s business environment remains sensitive to perceptions of political stability, making the prime minister’s next steps crucial for investor confidence and government credibility.
