Sasol Expands Aviation Fuel Reach With Supply Deal for Antarctic Flights

South African energy and chemicals group Sasol has signed a fuel supply agreement with White Desert, an Antarctic tourism and expedition operator, to support flights to the remote continent. The partnership will provide aviation fuel for White Desert’s specialised operations serving Antarctica, extending Sasol’s reach into one of the world’s most logistically demanding aviation environments, CNBC Africa reported. The agreement comes as Sasol continues to strengthen its aviation fuel business, even as the company manages operational challenges at its Natref refinery, which recently experienced an unplanned shutdown affecting some jet fuel supplies.

The agreement is commercially significant because supplying fuel for Antarctic aviation requires dependable logistics and fuel that can perform under extreme operating conditions. Sasol has established capabilities across conventional aviation fuels and sustainable aviation fuel, with the company saying its aviation solutions are supported by production and infrastructure across Secunda, Natref and Sasolburg. Sasol also says it has produced its first batch of on specification fully synthetic jet fuel at its Secunda operations, while its aviation offering is designed to provide scalable supply to airlines, cargo operators and airports.

The deal also highlights the wider potential of South Africa’s sophisticated synthetic fuels and chemicals capabilities to serve specialised international markets. Sasol uses Fischer Tropsch technology to convert feedstocks into synthetic fuel products and has positioned its aviation business around both conventional fuel security and lower carbon alternatives. According to Sasol, its sustainable aviation fuel can provide up to 80% lower lifecycle emissions than conventional jet fuel, while its existing infrastructure offers a pathway to scale production without relying entirely on new greenfield facilities.

The So What is that the White Desert agreement gives Sasol a specialised international customer at a time when aviation fuel supply, reliability and decarbonisation are becoming increasingly important commercial considerations. It also demonstrates how South African industrial capabilities can serve niche global markets far beyond the country’s traditional energy customers. The immediate challenge for Sasol will be maintaining reliable production and supply, particularly after the recent Natref disruption, while developing commercially viable sustainable aviation fuel solutions. For investors and the wider African energy industry, the partnership offers another indication that Sasol’s fuel technology and infrastructure can create export opportunities in specialised aviation markets while supporting the transition towards lower carbon fuels.
