Tanzania Names New Prime Minister After Disputed Election

Tanzania has appointed Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba as the country’s new Prime Minister, following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s contested re-election in late October. The appointment was confirmed on 13 November in Dodoma after a parliamentary vote that strongly backed Nchemba’s nomination, as reported by Reuters. The move comes at a sensitive moment for the country as political tensions linger over an election the opposition has described as deeply flawed.

Nchemba’s selection answers the immediate question of who will steer government operations after the disputed poll, which saw Hassan returned to office with a wide margin. Parliamentary Speaker Tulia Ackson announced the confirmation, highlighting that Nchemba, a former finance minister and long-serving CCM legislator, was the president’s preferred candidate.
