South Sudan Hands Over U.S. Deportee to Mexico in Diplomatic Handover

The government of South Sudan has repatriated a Mexican national who was deported from the United States in July, in what officials described as a smooth diplomatic exercise conducted under international human rights protocols. The man, identified as Jesus Muñoz Gutiérrez, was formally transferred to Mexico’s ambassador in Juba, Alejandro Ives Estivill, Reuters detailed.

In a statement, South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry said the handover was carried out after Mexico provided written assurances that the deportee would not face torture, degrading treatment, or unfair prosecution on his return. Officials stressed that the process reflected South Sudan’s respect for international law and human rights obligations, as highlighted in the ministry’s release.

Diplomatic observers note that this is the first such case handled by Juba and that six other third-country nationals deported from the U.S. remain in South Sudan’s custody awaiting similar arrangements. Analysts add that the move positions the country as an active partner in broader migration management discussions, Reuters further explained.
