South Africa’s CHARGE rolls out off-grid EV charging network on key transport corridor

CHARGE has launched a series of off-grid electric vehicle charging stations along the Johannesburg-to-Durban corridor as South Africa accelerates efforts to expand sustainable transport infrastructure. The rollout marks one of the country’s most ambitious EV charging initiatives to date, according to Reuters and TimesLive.

The charging stations are powered through renewable energy and battery storage systems, allowing them to operate independently of South Africa’s strained national electricity grid. Officials involved in the project said the off-grid model is designed to address concerns around power shortages and load shedding, which have slowed broader electric mobility adoption across the country.

The Johannesburg-Durban route is one of South Africa’s busiest commercial and travel corridors, linking the country’s economic hub with its largest port city. Industry analysts say expanding charging infrastructure along major highways is critical to encouraging wider EV adoption among consumers and logistics operators.

South Africa’s electric vehicle market remains relatively small compared to Europe, China, and North America, but investment in charging infrastructure has accelerated as governments and companies pursue cleaner transport solutions. Analysts note that projects such as CHARGE’s off-grid network could position South Africa as an early leader in Africa’s emerging EV ecosystem while supporting renewable energy innovation and green mobility development.
