South Africa Set for Largest Cash-System Overhaul in Decades

South Africa, the continent’s wealthiest economy, is embarking on a major overhaul of its national cash management and banking infrastructure, aimed at modernizing payment systems and improving financial inclusion, as reported by Business Insider Africa.

The central bank and key financial institutions are coordinating a programme that will upgrade legacy cash-handling systems, introduce advanced digital tracking technologies, and streamline interbank transactions. Officials cited the move as critical to reducing operational inefficiencies and strengthening the resilience of the financial sector.

According to Business Insider Africa, the initiative will also involve partnerships with fintech companies and global payment technology providers to ensure interoperability with international financial networks, reflecting South Africa’s ambition to maintain its leadership in African financial markets.

Experts say the revamp could have significant knock-on effects, including faster settlement times, improved access to cash for underserved communities, and enhanced transparency in public and private sector financial flows.
