Priscilla Gathungu: Driving Growth and Social Impact at Java House Africa

The food and hospitality industry in East Africa has grown into one of the most dynamic sectors of the regional economy, fueled by rising urbanization, a youthful consumer base, and increasing demand for quality dining experiences. At the center of this transformation stands Priscilla Gathungu, the Chief Executive Officer of Java House Africa. Since her appointment in November 2022, she has led the group with a balance of strategic expansion and social purpose, setting a new standard for leadership in the sector.

Gathungu’s journey to the top has been marked by steady progression and a deep familiarity with the organization she now leads. She joined Java House in 2014 as Human Resources Director, serving in that role for six years before becoming Commercial Director. Later, as Divisional Managing Director of the Foodscape division, she gained critical experience in operations and strategy, earning her the trust of stakeholders. Her elevation to CEO was historic, making her the first Kenyan woman to lead Java House Group, according to reports in Capital Business and Business Daily Africa.

Her academic background reinforces her leadership style. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Management and Leadership and an MBA in Strategic Leadership from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. According to Business Today Kenya, this blend of organizational and strategic training has given her a dual perspective, enabling her to balance the human side of management with the demands of performance and growth.

Under her leadership, Java House has embraced expansion with renewed energy. In 2024, the company opened two new outlets in Nairobi, one in Loresho and another on Ojijo Road, bringing the total number of outlets across East Africa to 88. Of these, 81 are in Kenya, four in Uganda, and three in Rwanda, according to Billionaires Africa. This growth reflects her commitment to extending Java House’s footprint while ensuring the brand remains accessible to a broader customer base.

Equally important to Gathungu is social impact. She has overseen the strengthening of the Java Foundation, which focuses on food security and education. In 2023, Java House partnered with Stanbic Bank and Uni Industries to provide daily lunches to more than 184,000 schoolchildren at Ngunyumu and Gatina Primary Schools, as reported by Capital Business. Gathungu has emphasized that such initiatives are not just about meals but about improving attendance and enabling children to learn effectively.

Priscilla Gathungu represents a new wave of leadership in East Africa’s hospitality industry. She brings to the table a combination of operational knowledge, strategic vision, and social consciousness. By steering Java House toward growth while embedding impact-driven programs into its operations, she is proving that success in business can be measured not only in profits but in the value created for communities. Her work is redefining what it means to lead in a sector that touches millions of lives every day.
