Netflix names longtime director Jay Hoag chairman as Reed Hastings exits board

Netflix has appointed longtime board member and venture capitalist Jay Hoag as chairman, succeeding co-founder Reed Hastings, who has officially stepped down from the board after nearly three decades with the streaming giant, according to Reuters. The leadership transition marks the end of an era for one of the world’s most influential media companies.

Hoag, a founding partner of Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV), has served on Netflix’s board since 1999 and has held the position of lead independent director for more than a decade. Netflix announced that he assumed the role of chairman following the company’s annual shareholder meeting on June 4.

Hastings, who co-founded Netflix in 1997, helped transform the company from a DVD-by-mail service into a global streaming powerhouse that reshaped the entertainment industry. Netflix said earlier this year that Hastings would leave the board to focus on philanthropy and other pursuits after stepping down as chief executive in 2023.

Investing.com views Hoag’s appointment as a move that ensures continuity in governance while Netflix enters a new phase under co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters. As one of Netflix’s longest-serving directors and an early investor through TCV, Hoag has played a key role in overseeing the company’s evolution into one of the world’s most valuable entertainment businesses.
