Microsoft selects South Africa for $329m cloud and AI expansion drive

Microsoft has chosen South Africa as a key hub for a $329 million expansion in cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence training, reinforcing the country’s growing role in Africa’s digital economy. The investment, highlighted in April 2026, is part of the company’s broader strategy to scale hyperscale cloud capacity and deepen AI capabilities across the continent, as reported by Business Insider Africa.

The funding builds on earlier commitments of about 5.4 billion rand (roughly $300 million) to expand data centre infrastructure and strengthen cloud services in South Africa. These investments are aimed at increasing capacity for AI model training, enterprise cloud services, and digital transformation across industries, positioning the country as a regional technology anchor.

A significant portion of the initiative is focused on skills development, with Microsoft targeting the training of up to one million South Africans in AI and digital skills by 2026. The programme includes certifications in areas such as data science, cybersecurity, and cloud architecture, designed to build a future-ready workforce and support innovation ecosystems.

The expansion aligns with South Africa’s broader push to become a leading AI hub, supported by policy efforts to boost digital infrastructure and innovation. Microsoft’s continued investment signals strong confidence in the country’s technology landscape, while reinforcing Africa’s emergence as a critical frontier for global cloud and AI deployment in an increasingly digital global economy.
