Mercedes-Benz Launches Fresh €1 Billion Share Buyback as Carmaker Strengthens Investor Returns

Mercedes-Benz Group will launch a new €1 billion share buyback programme on September 1, 2026, extending the German luxury carmaker’s strategy of returning excess capital to shareholders, Bloomberg reported. The programme, approved by the company’s Management and Supervisory Boards, allows Mercedes-Benz to repurchase up to 58 million shares through April 6, 2027.

The planned purchases come as Mercedes-Benz continues to navigate a challenging automotive environment, particularly intense competition in China, tariffs and weaker demand in some markets. Despite those pressures, the company has maintained a focus on cost discipline and cash generation. Its 2025 results included €5.4 billion in free cash flow from the industrial business.

The new programme will run alongside Mercedes-Benz’s broader capital allocation strategy, which combines investment in new vehicles and technology with dividends and share repurchases. The company had already been executing a separate €2 billion buyback programme launched in November 2025, underscoring management’s continued commitment to shareholder returns.

For investors, the fresh buyback signals confidence in Mercedes-Benz’s balance sheet and long term earnings potential despite near term pressures facing the global luxury auto market. Reducing the number of shares outstanding can also support earnings per share and shareholder value if the repurchases are made at attractive valuations.
