MaXhosa Africa Makes Paris Fashion Week History as African Design Takes Centre Stage

Paris Women’s Fashion Week opened on September 28 with a significant moment for African luxury as South African label MaXhosa Africa presented its first full runway show on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar, alongside Canadian label Matières Fécales. The Spring Summer 2027 season features 67 scheduled catwalk shows as the global fashion industry confronts weaker luxury spending, shifting consumer priorities and mounting pressure on brands to demonstrate commercial relevance. MaXhosa Africa, founded by Laduma Ngxokolo in 2010, has spent several seasons building its presence in Paris before receiving approval from the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode to join the official programme.

The Johannesburg based luxury knitwear house used its Paris debut to present Siyi Kulture, a collection centred on South African identity, Xhosa heritage and the transmission of music, rhythm and movement across generations. According to MaXhosa Africa, the collection combines its signature patterns with new textile developments, elevated tailoring and contemporary silhouettes, positioning traditional design codes within a modern luxury framework. The show also featured South African musician Sjava, reinforcing the brand’s longstanding connection between fashion, music and African cultural expression. The Fédération’s official schedule lists MaXhosa Africa at 5pm on the opening day, marking a notable expansion of the brand’s international fashion platform.

The timing is significant for the global luxury fashion industry. Reuters reported ahead of Paris Fashion Week that major luxury groups are facing declining sales, weaker middle class spending and increased pressure to justify premium prices through innovation, customer experience and cultural relevance. Against that backdrop, MaXhosa Africa’s official Paris runway provides a platform for African design to participate directly in one of the industry’s most influential commercial and cultural showcases. Matières Fécales, founded by Hannah Rose and Steven Raj, also represents the rise of independent labels challenging conventional luxury codes through fashion, performance and radical self expression. Together, the opening day signals how Paris Fashion Week is increasingly creating space for distinctive creative identities as established luxury houses navigate a more demanding global market.
