Ghana Launches Maiden Black Star Fashion Week to Position Industry for Global Competitiveness

Ghana has taken a new step towards strengthening its fashion industry with the launch of the maiden Black Star Fashion Week Summit in Accra on November 4, 2026, as reported by Graphic Online and Citi Newsroom. Held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel under the theme “Put Ghana On”, the summit brought together policymakers, designers, entrepreneurs, investors, manufacturers and other creative industry stakeholders to examine how Ghanaian fashion can expand its commercial reach and compete more effectively in international markets. Organised by the Black Star Experience Secretariat in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Creative Arts Agency and the Ghana Tourism Authority, the initiative forms part of a broader national effort to promote Ghana’s cultural and creative industries.

Discussions focused on some of the structural challenges facing the sector, including access to finance, manufacturing capacity, skills development, intellectual property protection, export readiness and international market access. Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie described fashion as a strategic pillar of Ghana’s creative economy, highlighting the economic potential of its cultural assets, from Kente and Fugu to Adinkra symbols, traditional weaving and beadwork. She called for closer integration of fashion with tourism, arguing that fashion exhibitions, heritage tours, cultural festivals and creative markets could create new commercial opportunities for local businesses. Black Star Experience Coordinator Rex Omar also announced plans for an annual Ghana Fashion Industry Report from 2027 to provide data that could guide investment and policy decisions.

The summit forms the first major component of the maiden Black Star Fashion Week, which will continue with a fashion showcase at the Royal Senchi Hotel in Akosombo on November 7. A central feature of the initiative is its 16-Region Designer Programme, created to spotlight emerging designers whose work draws on the cultural identity, materials and craftsmanship of Ghana’s regions. The showcase will culminate in a Presidential Runway, alongside opportunities for designers to connect with buyers, investors and other industry players. Beyond the visibility of the runway, the initiative reflects Ghana’s ambition to move its fashion sector from cultural expression and creative talent towards a more structured industry capable of generating employment, expanding exports and building internationally competitive brands.
