Liya Kebede: Weaving Ethiopia’s Heritage into Global Luxury with Lemlem

Few African entrepreneurs embody the intersection of luxury, sustainability, and social impact as powerfully as Liya Kebede. A celebrated Ethiopian supermodel, actress, and philanthropist, she is also the founder of Lemlem, a fashion and lifestyle brand that has become a global beacon for sustainable African luxury. By blending artisanal heritage with contemporary design, Kebede has not only preserved Ethiopia’s ancient weaving traditions but also brought them into the wardrobes of the world’s most discerning consumers.

From Supermodel to Changemaker

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Liya Kebede rose to international fame as a model, gracing the covers of Vogue and becoming the first woman of color to represent Estée Lauder as a global spokesperson. Yet, despite her global success, she remained deeply connected to her Ethiopian roots.

During a visit home in the mid-2000s, Kebede encountered local artisans struggling to sustain the centuries-old handweaving traditions of Ethiopia. The decline of the craft struck her as both a cultural and economic loss, sparking the idea for a brand that could preserve heritage while empowering communities. In 2007, she launched Lemlem, which means “to bloom” or “to flourish” in Amharic, according to African Vibes.

The Lemlem Vision

At its heart, Lemlem is a socially conscious luxury brand. Each piece is handcrafted by Ethiopian weavers using traditional techniques, infused with modern designs that appeal to global fashion consumers. The brand is known for its resort wear, dresses, and accessories, characterized by lightweight fabrics, handwoven stripes, and a breezy elegance that resonates with both African heritage and cosmopolitan style.

Beyond clothing, Lemlem is an impact-driven movement. The company provides sustainable jobs to hundreds of artisans in Ethiopia and across Africa, ensuring that traditional weaving not only survives but thrives in modern markets.

Global Expansion

Lemlem quickly moved from a small passion project to a globally recognized brand. Today, it is carried by over 150 retailers worldwide, including prestigious outlets like Net-a-Porter, Saks Fifth Avenue, and MatchesFashion. The brand has also collaborated with luxury houses and organizations committed to sustainability, such as H&M Conscious Exclusive Collection and the UN’s Ethical Fashion Initiative.

By positioning Lemlem as both a luxury and ethical brand, Kebede has successfully tapped into a global demand for fashion that combines exclusivity with responsibility.

Recognition and Legacy

Liya Kebede’s work with Lemlem has earned her global accolades, not just in fashion but also in philanthropy. She was named to Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World, and her Liya Kebede Foundation continues to advocate for maternal health across Africa.

Through Lemlem, she has shown that African craftsmanship is not just tradition, it is luxury, innovation, and empowerment. By telling Africa’s story through textiles, she has created a blueprint for how luxury can uplift communities while captivating global audiences.

Luxury with Purpose

For Liya Kebede, luxury is not about excess, it is about meaning. Every Lemlem garment carries a story of heritage, resilience, and pride. And in doing so, she has redefined what it means to be a luxury entrepreneur from Africa: a leader who merges artistry with advocacy, style with substance.
