LASG awards ₦900m in grants to researchers and startups to drive innovation

Lagos State Government has awarded more than ₦900 million in grants to 155 researchers and startups as part of efforts to strengthen innovation, scientific research, and technology-driven enterprise development in Nigeria’s commercial capital. The funding was announced through Lagos State’s science, technology, and innovation support programmes, according to official government statements and local media reports.

The beneficiaries include early-stage startups, academic researchers, innovators, and technology-focused enterprises working across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, artificial intelligence, education, fintech, and clean energy. State officials said the initiative is designed to encourage local problem-solving, commercial research, and youth-driven entrepreneurship.

Lagos has increasingly positioned itself as one of Africa’s leading technology and startup ecosystems, attracting venture capital investment and supporting digital innovation hubs across the state. Government representatives said the grant programme aligns with broader plans to build a knowledge-based economy capable of creating jobs and driving long-term economic competitiveness.

Analysts say the intervention could help accelerate product development and research commercialisation while strengthening collaboration between academia, government, and the private sector. They note that increased local funding support remains critical for startups and researchers facing rising operational costs and limited access to early-stage financing.
