Germany Pledges Security Support to Nigeria While Seeking Stronger Economic Partnership

Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in tackling regional security threats while signalling plans to deepen trade and investment ties with Africa’s largest economy, according to Reuters. During a visit to Abuja, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul pledged €10 million ($11.4 million) this year to support the return and reintegration of people displaced by insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast. He warned that escalating violence by Islamic State and Al Qaeda-linked groups in the Sahel is increasingly threatening the stability of West Africa’s coastal nations, making closer international cooperation essential.

Meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Wadephul described Nigeria as a strategic partner for Germany, recognising its role as West Africa’s largest economy and a leading force within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Both ministers agreed that sustained international partnerships are critical to addressing terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime, and other security challenges confronting the region.

Beyond security, the discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation between the two countries. Wadephul noted that bilateral trade between Germany and Nigeria grew by around 10% over the past year, with Nigeria remaining Germany’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa. More than 100 German companies currently operate in Nigeria across sectors including manufacturing, engineering, energy, and industrial services, highlighting the growing commercial relationship between both nations.

The renewed commitment underscores Germany’s broader strategy of strengthening partnerships with key African economies through a combination of security cooperation and increased private-sector investment. Analysts say deeper collaboration with Germany could support Nigeria’s efforts to improve security, attract foreign investment, expand industrial development, and strengthen economic growth, while reinforcing bilateral ties between Europe’s largest economy and one of Africa’s most influential markets.
