Funke Adeoye – Fighting for Justice Behind Bars

In a country where thousands languish in detention without trial, Funke Adeoye has become a powerful voice for dignity, fairness, and reform. A lawyer, social innovator, and human rights defender, Funke has dedicated her career to transforming Nigeria’s criminal justice system through legal aid, advocacy, and rehabilitation. Her work challenges the idea that prisons should only punish; instead, she insists they must also restore, rehabilitate, and reintegrate.

A Calling Shaped by Experience

Funke’s path into justice reform is deeply personal. Growing up, she witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of wrongful detention within her own family, an experience that opened her eyes to the inequities of the legal system. Later, while studying Law at the University of Benin, she became more determined to use her skills not just to build a career, but to right systemic wrongs.

Her vision sharpened further through fellowships and global exposure, including the Mandela Washington Fellowship and the Acumen West Africa Fellowship. These experiences reinforced her conviction that justice reform is not only a legal issue but also a question of human dignity and development.

Hope Behind Bars Africa

In 2018, Funke founded Hope Behind Bars Africa, a nonprofit dedicated to closing justice gaps and giving voice to the underserved. The organization offers pro bono legal aid to indigent pre-trial detainees, advocates for policy reforms, and runs rehabilitation and reintegration programs.

One of its flagship initiatives, Made in Corrections, equips inmates with vocational skills and creates pathways for them to earn an income while incarcerated. Through other projects like Inside-Out Hubs, the organization supports ex-inmates to reintegrate into society and avoid recidivism. To date, over 7,000 justice-involved individuals have benefited from their interventions, a testament to Funke’s relentless drive.

Driving Reform with Innovation

Funke is not content with patchwork solutions; she pushes for systemic change. Under her leadership, Hope Behind Bars Africa leverages technology and data to improve case management, track trial delays, and strengthen advocacy campaigns. She also champions the decriminalization of petty offences and the expansion of non-custodial sentencing, arguing that overcrowded prisons cannot solve deeper social problems.

Her approach is rooted in restorative justice, believing that those who come into conflict with the law should not be condemned indefinitely, but given the tools and opportunities to rebuild their lives.

Recognition and Global Influence

Funke’s pioneering work has earned international acclaim. In 2023, she received the Waislitz Global Citizen’s Choice Award, which came with $75,000 to expand her advocacy. In 2024, she was named an Ashoka Fellow, joining a global network of social entrepreneurs recognized for innovative solutions to pressing challenges. She has also been spotlighted by The Future Awards Africa and featured in numerous platforms as one of the continent’s most promising changemakers.

Yet for Funke, these accolades are not the end goal. They are platforms to amplify her message and secure resources to scale her impact.

A Vision of Justice with Dignity

Funke Adeoye’s philosophy is clear: justice must go beyond punishment. She envisions a system where pre-trial detainees are not forgotten, where prisons become places of rehabilitation, and where people who have served time can re-enter society with dignity.

It is a bold, compassionate vision, one that confronts deeply entrenched attitudes and systemic inefficiencies. But through her leadership, persistence, and innovative spirit, Funke Adeoye is proving that justice, when paired with humanity, can change not just systems, but lives.
