European Union Announces €63 Million in Humanitarian Funding for Somalia

The European Union has announced €63 million in humanitarian assistance for Somalia to address worsening food insecurity, displacement and health emergencies, the European Commission said in a statement released on February 26, 2026, as reported by Cyprus News Agency.

According to the European Commission’s announcement, the funding will focus on life-saving interventions including emergency food assistance, treatment for severe acute malnutrition, healthcare services, clean water access, sanitation support and protection services, with implementation carried out through EU humanitarian partners on the ground. The Commission noted that cash-based assistance will also form part of the response to help vulnerable households meet urgent needs, as detailed in its official release and cited by Reuters.

The humanitarian package comes amid escalating needs in Somalia, where an estimated 6.5 million people face acute food insecurity, and nearly 1.85 million children under five are projected to suffer from acute malnutrition, figures highlighted in the Commission’s assessment and referenced in coverage by The Brussels Times. Prolonged drought, armed conflict and economic pressures have compounded the crisis, the reports noted.

The Brussels Times further reported that the latest allocation brings total EU humanitarian assistance to Somalia to more than €750 million since 2017, underscoring the bloc’s continued engagement in the Horn of Africa despite growing global funding constraints.
