Enugu State Launches Enugu Air to Strengthen Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth

The Government of Enugu State, in partnership with private sector stakeholders, has formally launched a new sub-national airline, Enugu Air, positioning the Southeast state as a rising force in Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector.

The official launch ceremony was held on July 20, 2025, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, with state officials, aviation partners, and private investors in attendance. The airline begins operations with a fleet comprising Embraer E170 and E190 aircraft, and will initially serve the Enugu–Abuja–Lagos corridor, with expansion plans into Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano in the coming months.

According to statements issued by the Enugu State Government, the new carrier is being operated in its early stages by XEJet, under a transitional arrangement, as Enugu Air works toward obtaining its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC). The public-private partnership structure behind the airline reflects a growing trend among Nigerian sub-national governments to use air transport infrastructure as a platform for development and investment attraction.

The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to economic activity in Enugu State, facilitating increased access for traders, students, and business travelers. Local authorities also project the airline will support job creation across the aviation value chain, including ground handling, customer service, and technical operations.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Peter Mbah highlighted the airline’s role in Enugu’s broader development strategy, saying, “Enugu Air is more than a transport solution, it is a strategic enabler for commerce, education, healthcare, and tourism in the Southeast.”

With the establishment of Enugu Air, the state joins Akwa Ibom, which launched Ibom Air in 2019, as one of the few sub-national entities in Nigeria to operate a commercial airline. Analysts view this as part of a broader shift in state-led infrastructure investment, particularly in aviation, logistics, and intermodal transport.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reportedly expressed support for the airline’s integration into national scheduling frameworks, while the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is working with the operator to fast-track regulatory approvals for route expansion.

Future plans for Enugu Air include launching regional flights to West and Central African destinations, and eventually connecting with key international hubs in Europe, Asia, and North America, once fleet capacity and regulatory thresholds are met.

Aviation analysts note that the entry of Enugu Air into the market could further stimulate competition and drive down costs for travelers in Eastern Nigeria, while also positioning Enugu as a logistics and business hub within the national airspace network.
