Egypt Receives €1 Billion EU Disbursement Under Strategic Assistance Programme

Egypt has received €1 billion in macro financial assistance from the European Union, providing fresh support for the country’s balance of payments and budget financing needs. The disbursement forms part of a wider €5 billion EU macro financial assistance programme, released under the EU Egypt Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership, according to Reuters.

The ministry said the funds were unlocked after Egypt met agreed policy and reform benchmarks tied to fiscal discipline, public finance management and structural reforms, as outlined in the government’s National Structural Reform Programme. Xinhua news noted that the support is expected to ease short term financing pressures, improve debt sustainability and create additional room for priority spending.

European officials confirmed that the payment represents the first tranche of the second phase of EU assistance, with further disbursements planned in 2026 subject to continued reform progress. The European Commission said the programme is designed to support macroeconomic stability while encouraging reforms that strengthen the private sector and improve economic governance.

The EU funding sits within a broader €7.4 billion financial framework for Egypt, which combines loans, guarantees and grants to support economic resilience and investment. The package reflects deepening cooperation between Cairo and Brussels as Egypt works to stabilise its economy and advance long term growth objectives.
