Egypt Negotiates Multi-Year LNG Supply Agreements With Global Energy Companies

Egypt is in advanced discussions with several of the world’s leading energy companies to secure multi-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreements, as the country seeks to strengthen energy security and meet rising domestic demand. According to Reuters, the government is negotiating long-term contracts with major international suppliers, including Saudi Aramco, Shell, Trafigura, Vitol, Hartree Partners, and BHP, with deliveries expected to begin later this year. The proposed agreements would help reduce Egypt’s reliance on costly spot market purchases while ensuring a more stable supply of natural gas.

The move comes as Egypt works to address widening energy shortages caused by declining domestic gas production and rising electricity consumption, particularly during the summer months. The country, which was previously an LNG exporter following the development of the Zohr gas field, has increasingly turned to imports to meet domestic needs. Officials are seeking contracts spanning several years to improve supply certainty while supporting electricity generation and industrial activity.

Industry sources said the government is aiming to diversify its supplier base while taking advantage of competitive long-term pricing structures rather than depending on volatile spot cargoes. The agreements are also expected to complement Egypt’s broader energy strategy, which includes expanding renewable energy capacity, boosting exploration activities, and restoring natural gas production through new upstream investments, Bloomberg reported. The negotiations follow recent efforts by Cairo to attract fresh investment into its oil and gas sector through revised fiscal incentives and licensing rounds.

For Egypt, securing long-term LNG supplies represents a critical step toward stabilising its energy market and supporting economic growth. Analysts say the agreements could reduce exposure to global gas price volatility, improve power reliability for households and businesses, and reinforce Egypt’s role as a strategic energy hub linking Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The outcome of the negotiations will also be closely watched by international investors assessing opportunities in the country’s evolving energy sector.
