Egypt moves to become global grain trading and storage powerhouse

Egypt is intensifying efforts to position itself as a major global grain trading and storage hub as the country seeks to strengthen food security and expand its influence across regional agricultural supply chains. Speaking at a grain industry event in Sochi, Russia, Supply Minister Sherif Farouk said Egypt is pursuing an ambitious strategy focused on grain storage, processing, and regional trade expansion, according to Reuters.

Farouk said the plan aims to transform Egypt into a strategic centre for grain distribution serving the Middle East, Africa, and other international markets. The country is already the world’s largest importer of wheat, with Russian supplies accounting for a major share of its grain purchases amid growing global demand and supply chain disruptions.

The strategy includes expanding silo capacity, improving logistics infrastructure, modernising ports, and strengthening grain processing industries to reduce waste and improve supply resilience. Analysts say Egypt’s geographic position connecting Africa, Europe, and Asia gives it a competitive advantage in regional agricultural trade and food distribution.

Food security has become an increasingly critical priority for Egypt following global commodity market volatility linked to geopolitical tensions, climate disruptions, and rising population demand. Industry experts note that becoming a major grain trading hub could help Egypt strengthen economic resilience, stabilise domestic supply chains, and increase its regional economic influence.
