Chinese Firm to Deliver Nigeria’s First 7 MW Floating Solar Power Project

Nigeria has awarded China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) the contract to build the country’s first-ever 7-megawatt floating solar power plant. The facility will be installed on the lagoon waters surrounding the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and is expected to supply clean, reliable electricity to the campus, according to Business Insider Africa.

The floating solar project will reduce UNILAG’s dependence on diesel generators and the national grid, lowering energy costs while improving power reliability. Floating solar panels, mounted on buoyant structures atop water bodies, also maximize land use and benefit from natural cooling, which enhances efficiency.

Officials said the project aligns with Nigeria’s broader renewable energy and carbon reduction goals, supporting the country’s transition toward sustainable power. Once completed, the facility will serve as a model for future floating solar initiatives in Nigeria, demonstrating how innovative technologies can expand access to clean energy in public institutions, as reported by Firstdaily.
