China Reaffirms Support for Somalia After Top Diplomat Postpones Visit

China has reiterated its support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity after postponing a planned visit by Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a trip that would have marked the first by a Chinese foreign minister to Mogadishu in decades. Wang conveyed Beijing’s position during a phone call with Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Dhaay, emphasizing China’s commitment to Somalia’s unity and stability, as stated in remarks cited by Reuters.

The visit was delayed due to what Chinese officials described as a scheduling adjustment, with both sides agreeing to reschedule at a later date. During the call, Wang stressed China’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Somalia across development, security and economic sectors, reflecting the long-standing diplomatic ties between the two countries, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.

China also reaffirmed its opposition to any actions that could undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity, including moves related to Somaliland’s status. Beijing’s position aligns with its broader foreign policy stance on sovereignty issues and comes amid heightened diplomatic activity in the Horn of Africa, as reported by SABC news.

Somali officials welcomed China’s assurances, viewing them as a significant show of diplomatic support at a time of increased regional sensitivities. The reaffirmation follows recent international developments involving Somalia and is seen as reinforcing Mogadishu’s standing with key global partners, Reuters reported.
