Australian miner makes major copper-silver discovery in Namibia amid critical minerals race

An Australian mining company has announced a significant copper and silver discovery in Namibia, adding fresh momentum to Africa’s growing role in the global scramble for critical minerals needed for clean energy technologies and industrial manufacturing. The discovery was made at the Otavi Copper Project, where exploration drilling revealed high-grade copper and silver mineralisation, according to The Namibian.

Midas Minerals said drilling at the Spaatzu Prospect uncovered multiple mineralised zones, including intersections grading more than 2.5% copper alongside substantial silver concentrations. The company described the discovery as one of the most promising shallow copper-silver finds within the Otavi region, with ongoing drilling expected to expand the resource potential further.

The development comes as global demand for copper and strategic minerals accelerates due to rising investment in electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, battery production, and data technologies. Analysts say Namibia has increasingly attracted attention from international miners because of its stable mining environment and growing portfolio of critical mineral projects.

Industry experts note that discoveries such as Otavi reinforce Africa’s rising strategic importance in future global supply chains. They add that competition among Western, Chinese, and Gulf-backed investors for access to copper, lithium, cobalt, and rare earth resources is expected to intensify as countries seek long-term energy and industrial security.
