Africa’s Largest Refinery Locks in 1.5 billion-Litre Monthly Petrol Supply as Dangote Targets End to Imports

Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery has secured a monthly petrol supply of 1.5 billion litres as it ramps up operations to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fuel, the company said on Friday. The move positions the refinery to meet domestic demand and bolster Nigeria’s energy security, according to Business Insider Africa.

The refinery, Africa’s largest, currently operates at near full capacity, producing petrol, diesel, and jet fuel. Chief Executive Officer Segun Adebutu stated that the secured supply will allow the firm to progressively cut the nation’s dependence on imported petroleum products, as reported by Bloomberg.

Energy analysts note that Dangote’s strategy could reshape West Africa’s fuel market by stabilising supply and prices while supporting downstream distribution infrastructure, according to Reuters.

The refinery, located in Lagos, has the capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude per day, with plans to expand output to 1.4 million barrels per day. This scale positions it as a key player not only in Nigeria but across the continent, as highlighted by Financial Times.

Dangote Group added that the refinery’s integrated infrastructure, including storage terminals and pipelines, will underpin long-term energy independence for Nigeria and potentially reduce the nation’s import bill significantly.
