The United Kingdom will start issuing electronic visas (eVisas) to Nigerian nationals applying for visit visas from February 25, 2026, replacing the traditional physical visa stickers previously affixed in passports, according to Tribune Online.
Under the new system, Nigerian travellers will receive a secure digital record of their visa accessible through an online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account instead of a physical vignette. The move is part of the UK government’s broader shift toward fully digital border management, aimed at improving efficiency and security.
The application process and eligibility requirements remain unchanged. Applicants must still complete visa forms, attend visa application centres to provide biometric data, and meet all standard criteria. The key change is in the format of the visa, which will now be digital.
UKVI officials confirmed that Nigerians holding valid physical visas do not need to take any action, as those visas will remain valid until expiry or normal replacement. The eVisa system is expected to streamline processing, reduce reliance on paper documentation, speed up passport returns, and enhance security, since digital visas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with like physical stickers, ChannelsTv reports.
This rollout aligns with the United Kingdom’s broader border modernization strategy, which also includes the introduction of Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirements for travelers from visa‑exempt countries beginning on the same date.
