Congo and Rwanda Presidents Set to Sign Peace Deal in Washington Next Week, Sources Say

Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame are expected to travel to Washington next week to sign a landmark peace agreement aimed at easing regional tensions and stabilising eastern Congo, according to diplomatic sources quoted by Reuters. The meeting is scheduled for December 4 and forms part of a broader international effort to halt the escalation of violence linked to the M23 rebellion.

The deal builds on the economic integration framework the two countries initialled earlier in November, which was intended to complement ongoing security discussions, as reported by Reuters in a separate update on the process. The framework is seen by mediators as a critical step toward creating incentives for long-term cooperation between Kigali and Kinshasa.

The upcoming signing is also expected to include talks with United States President Donald Trump, who has played a mediating role in recent months, according to the same diplomatic sources. Washington has positioned the engagement as part of its wider approach to conflict resolution in the Great Lakes region.

Despite the momentum generated by the planned signing, analysts caution that the success of the agreement will depend on implementation. Reuters noted that past efforts have stalled due to delays in troop withdrawals, challenges in disarming armed groups, and the absence of clear timelines for neutralising militia activity in eastern Congo. While the new accord signals renewed political will, the path to durable peace remains uncertain.
