Morocco to Phase Out Coal Power by 2040

Morocco has announced plans to completely phase out coal power generation by 2040 as part of its broader energy transition and climate commitment. The government said the move is aligned with its ambition to expand renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions, though officials noted that full implementation would depend on access to sufficient international climate finance, as reported by Reuters.

Coal currently accounts for about 59.3 percent of Morocco’s electricity generation, down from roughly 70 percent in 2022, according to the country’s updated climate plan. The government aims to boost the share of renewables in its installed power capacity to 52 percent by 2030, up from around 45 percent today.

Energy Minister Leila Benali confirmed that Morocco has halted all new coal power projects and is preparing to retire existing plants earlier than planned. She added that a “just transition” framework is being developed to support workers and communities affected by the shift.

Industry analysts say the phase-out plan positions Morocco as a regional leader in sustainable energy policy while attracting new investment in solar, wind, and energy storage projects. However, they caution that success will depend on regulatory stability and sustained international partnerships to finance the transition.
