Democrats Sweep US Midterms as Voters Deliver Verdict on Economy and Trump Administration

The Democratic Party has secured control of both chambers of the United States Congress in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Democrats captured the Senate and House of Representatives, flipping at least seven Republican-held Senate seats and gaining more than two dozen seats in the House, according to results reported by the Associated Press and Reuters. The victories also extended to several gubernatorial contests, including significant gains in traditionally Republican states. The outcome marks a shift in Washington’s political balance and will give Democrats greater power to scrutinise the administration, block presidential nominees and challenge legislative priorities during the final two years of Trump’s term.

Economic concerns played a central role in the election, with the rising cost of living, affordability pressures and dissatisfaction with the administration’s economic direction emerging as major issues for voters. Bloomberg reported that Democratic candidates built their campaigns around household costs, tariff policies and concerns about the economic consequences of the war with Iran. Exit polling conducted by SSRS for a consortium of US media organisations found that three-quarters of voters described themselves as angry or dissatisfied with the direction of the country, while 70 per cent wanted Congress to exercise greater checks and balances on the president. Republicans, meanwhile, focused their campaigns on cultural and social issues, but struggled to counter the prominence of economic concerns in voters’ decisions. The results also exposed the limits of Trump’s direct involvement in several closely contested races, as candidates backed by the president suffered notable defeats.

The Democratic gains include historic political milestones across the country. In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a US state, while Florida elected Byron Donalds as its first Black Republican governor. Texas elected Gina Hinojosa as its first Latina governor, and California selected Xavier Becerra as its first Latino governor. Beyond the symbolic significance of these victories, the new congressional majority will have practical consequences for federal policymaking, government oversight and the administration’s legislative agenda. Democrats are expected to use their control of Congress to investigate the administration and demand concessions on major policy proposals. For the Republican Party, the results represent a significant electoral setback and raise questions about its economic messaging and strategy ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
