Google Commits $15 Billion to Malaysia Data Centre and Digital Infrastructure Expansion

Google, the technology subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced plans to invest $15 billion in Malaysia between 2027 and 2028, expanding its data centre infrastructure and strengthening the country’s position as a growing regional hub for artificial intelligence and cloud computing, according to Bloomberg. Announced on November 4, 2026, the investment will support new data centre campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, building on the company’s existing facility at Elmina Business Park in Selangor. The commitment also extends beyond digital infrastructure to include clean energy development, water security initiatives and workforce training. Alphabet and Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said the investment would provide the computing capacity needed to support innovation while strengthening local energy and water resources as operations expand.

Google estimates that construction of the new campuses will contribute an average of $1.1 billion annually to Malaysia’s gross domestic product and support more than 37,000 local jobs each year during the development phase. Once operational, the facilities are projected to sustain more than 9,000 jobs annually, with wages averaging 45 per cent above the national median. The company also plans to add more than one gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s national grid and says it will pay for all the electricity consumed by its data centre campuses, alongside the direct infrastructure costs required to connect them to the grid. Its facilities are expected to operate at a Power Usage Effectiveness rating of between 1.12 and 1.14, reflecting its focus on energy efficiency. In addition, Google has announced four programmes aimed at equipping 800,000 Malaysians with relevant digital and technology skills over the next five years.

The latest commitment builds on Google’s $2 billion investment announced in May 2024 to establish its first Malaysian data centre and Google Cloud region. Together, the projects reinforce Malaysia’s growing appeal to global technology companies seeking locations with expanding digital markets, infrastructure capacity and access to regional customers. The country has attracted major investments from cloud and technology providers as demand for artificial intelligence computing, data storage and cloud services accelerates across Southeast Asia. However, the expansion also places greater importance on sustainable electricity generation, water management and infrastructure planning, given the substantial resources required to operate large-scale data centres. For Google, the Malaysian investment represents a strategic expansion of its global computing network, while positioning the country to capture a larger share of the economic opportunities emerging from the AI economy.
