Nigerian education assessment specialist Dr Amos Josiah Dangut has assumed office as the 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, taking charge of the regional examination body from October 1, 2026, according to ChannelsTv. His five year tenure will run until September 2031, succeeding Pateh Bah of The Gambia. Dangut’s appointment was ratified by WAEC’s International Governing Board at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra in March 2026. He previously served as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023, a role he held until his elevation to the regional position.
Dangut brings more than two decades of experience within WAEC, having joined the Council in 1998 after beginning his education career as an examiner at St Louis College, Jos, in 1994. He subsequently held several positions across the organisation, including roles in test development, examination security, branch administration, post examination activities and zonal coordination. During his tenure as Head of the Nigerian National Office, WAEC said he championed initiatives including the rollout of Computer Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System. He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and technology systems supporting examination logistics and administration.
The appointment places a Nigerian professional with extensive experience in examination administration and educational technology at the helm of an institution whose assessments serve students across West Africa. Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a PhD in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning. He has also served on the governing boards of education bodies including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, while representing WAEC in national education policy forums. His new tenure comes as WAEC continues to expand digital examination systems and strengthen the security, efficiency and integrity of assessment across the region.
