Nigeria is moving ahead with the acquisition and deployment of NIGCOMSAT 2A and 2B, two next generation high throughput communications satellites designed to expand the country’s satellite capacity and strengthen broadband and critical communications infrastructure, as reported by ChannelsTv. The Federal Executive Council’s approval has moved the project into its next implementation phase.
The satellites are expected to provide additional capacity for high speed broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity and government services, while extending coverage to underserved and hard to reach communities where fibre networks and telecommunications infrastructure are difficult or expensive to deploy. The systems will also support digital services across education, healthcare, agriculture and financial services.
The programme also has a strategic security dimension. NIGCOMSAT has said the new satellites will strengthen secure communications and support national security requirements, reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign satellite infrastructure. Earlier government plans placed NIGCOMSAT 2A’s launch in 2028 and 2B’s in 2029, with financing and implementation now advancing.
For Nigeria, the investment could strengthen the country’s position in Africa’s expanding digital economy while creating opportunities across telecommunications, broadcasting, satellite terminals, ground infrastructure and systems integration. The broader objective is to build a more resilient digital backbone that can reach communities beyond the limits of terrestrial connectivity.
