Australia Secures $1.8 Billion Defence Export Deal With Canada for Advanced Radar System

Australia has secured a landmark A$1.8 billion ($1.8 billion) defence export agreement with Canada for the supply of an advanced over-the-horizon radar system, marking one of the largest defence technology deals in the country’s history, as reported by Reuters and ChannelsTv. The agreement will see Canadian authorities acquire cutting-edge radar capabilities developed by Australian defence technology company CEA Technologies, strengthening North American air and maritime surveillance while showcasing Australia’s growing role in the global defence industry.

The radar system, known for its ability to detect and track aircraft, missiles, and maritime threats over vast distances, is expected to significantly enhance Canada’s early-warning and national security capabilities. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the deal as a major milestone for the country’s defence manufacturing sector, highlighting the increasing international demand for Australian-developed military technology. Officials said the agreement would also deepen defence cooperation between Australia and Canada, two close allies and members of the Five Eyes intelligence partnership.

The transaction reflects a broader trend of rising global investment in advanced defence systems amid growing geopolitical tensions and increasing focus on national security. Australia has been actively promoting its domestic defence industry as part of efforts to diversify exports, create high-skilled jobs, and establish itself as a supplier of sophisticated military technologies. The deal is expected to support hundreds of jobs across Australia’s defence manufacturing and engineering sectors while generating long-term economic benefits.

For the global defence market, the agreement underscores the increasing importance of advanced surveillance and detection systems in modern military operations. Analysts say demand for next-generation radar technologies is expected to remain strong as governments seek to strengthen border security, monitor strategic waterways, and counter evolving threats. The Canada contract not only represents a significant commercial success for Australia’s defence sector but also reinforces the country’s emergence as a competitive exporter of high-value defence technology.
