Nigeria’s telecom boom drives airtime spending beyond $5.6 billion as data demand surges

Nigeria’s rapidly expanding telecommunications sector has pushed consumer airtime spending beyond $5.6 billion as rising smartphone adoption, digital services, and internet consumption continue fueling unprecedented growth in data usage across the country. Industry data and regulatory reports show Nigerians are spending significantly more on voice, data, and digital connectivity services amid the country’s accelerating digital transformation.

According to figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission and Business Insider Africa, mobile data traffic and active internet subscriptions have continued climbing sharply, driven by increased streaming, fintech usage, social media engagement, remote work, gaming, and e-commerce activity. Telecom operators have also expanded network infrastructure investments to meet growing consumer demand.

Major operators including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Africa, Globacom, and 9mobile have benefited from stronger customer spending despite inflationary pressures affecting household incomes. Analysts say data services are increasingly becoming the primary revenue driver for telecom firms as Nigeria’s digital economy expands.

Industry observers note that Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing telecom markets, supported by its youthful population and rising digital adoption. They add that continued growth in mobile internet access, fintech platforms, artificial intelligence services, and digital entertainment is likely to further increase telecom spending and strengthen the sector’s role within the broader Nigerian economy.
