China’s solar exports to Africa jump 83% as energy shortages accelerate clean power demand

China’s solar exports to Africa surged by 83% over the past year as worsening electricity shortages, rising fuel costs, and expanding energy access programmes drove stronger demand for renewable power solutions across the continent. Industry trade data cited by Business Insider Africa and international market reports show Africa emerging as one of the fastest-growing destinations for Chinese solar equipment exports.

The sharp increase comes as several African countries continue to battle power supply crises, ageing electricity infrastructure, and growing industrial energy demand. Nations including South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Egypt have accelerated investments in solar energy projects, mini-grids, and off-grid renewable systems to reduce pressure on national grids.

Chinese manufacturers dominate the global solar supply chain and have increasingly expanded into African markets through exports of solar panels, battery storage systems, and renewable energy infrastructure equipment. Analysts say lower equipment costs and growing financing support from Chinese lenders have made solar adoption more accessible for African governments, businesses, and households.

Energy experts note that the export surge highlights Africa’s growing importance in the global energy transition despite the continent contributing only a small share of worldwide carbon emissions. They say rising renewable energy investments could help improve electricity access, support industrial growth, and reduce dependence on expensive diesel generation across many African economies.
