Tanzania’s rare earth discovery boosts Africa’s strategic minerals ambitions

A newly confirmed rare earth elements discovery in Mkiu Village, Ludewa District of Tanzania’s Njombe Region is adding fresh momentum to Africa’s growing role in the global race for critical minerals essential to clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing. The find is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s position within the rapidly expanding strategic minerals market, according to Business Insider Africa.

Rare earth elements are crucial components used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, batteries, defence systems, semiconductors, and high-tech electronics. Global demand for these minerals has surged in recent years as countries accelerate energy transition plans and seek alternative supply chains outside traditional dominant producers such as China.

Tanzanian authorities and mining analysts say the Mkiu discovery could attract new foreign investment into the country’s mining sector while supporting broader efforts to diversify mineral exports beyond gold and gemstones. The development also aligns with Africa’s wider push to capture greater value from critical mineral resources linked to the global green economy.

Industry experts note that Africa is increasingly emerging as a major frontier for lithium, cobalt, graphite, copper, manganese, and rare earth exploration as governments seek to position the continent as a strategic supplier in future energy and technology markets. They say discoveries such as the one in Tanzania could strengthen Africa’s leverage in global industrial supply chains over the coming decade.
