Ugo Ugochukwu Makes History as First Nigerian-American to Win FIA Formula 3 Championship

Nigerian American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has been crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Champion after finishing second in the final Feature Race at the Madring circuit in Madrid, Spain, on September 13. Driving for Campos Racing, the 19 year old secured the championship by finishing ahead of British rival Freddie Slater, ending the season 14 points clear at the top. According to Reuters, Ugochukwu becomes the first American driver to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship, marking a significant milestone in his progression towards Formula 2 and potentially Formula 1.

Ugochukwu entered the final weekend facing a difficult championship battle after Slater had led the standings by 15 points. His second place finish, behind Tuukka Taponen of MP Motorsport, was enough to secure the title as Slater failed to overturn the deficit. The FIA Formula 3 Championship confirmed Ugochukwu as champion after the Madrid Feature Race, while Formula 1 reported that the Campos Racing driver had maintained his composure in a decisive final round. The title represents a major turnaround from his 2025 rookie campaign, when he finished 16th overall with PREMA Racing after recording two podium finishes.

The achievement also adds another important chapter to Ugochukwu’s development through the international single seater system. Born in New York and of Nigerian heritage, he began competing in karting before moving into Formula 4 and later Formula Regional competition, winning the Euro 4 Championship in 2023 and the Macau Grand Prix in 2024. The FIA records show that he joined Campos Racing for his second Formula 3 season in 2026 after beginning the year by winning the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy. His progression places him among a generation of young drivers using Formula 3 as a critical pathway towards Formula 2 and the Formula 1 grid.

For Nigeria and the wider African sporting economy, Ugochukwu’s breakthrough is significant because it places Nigerian heritage at the centre of one of motorsport’s most important development championships. His success demonstrates the increasingly global nature of elite motorsport, where talent, commercial backing and international development programmes intersect to create pathways into Formula 1. The immediate question is what comes next, with the FIA Formula 3 title strengthening Ugochukwu’s credentials for a move up the single seater ladder. As Reuters reported, Formula 3 serves as a stepping stone to Formula 2 and ultimately Formula 1, making his 2026 championship not only a historic achievement but potentially the foundation for a much larger career on the global motorsport stage.
