Meet Dotun Popoola The Sculptor Turning Scrap Into Stories and Waste Into Art

Dotun David Popoola is a Nigerian contemporary sculptor, artist, curator, storyteller, environmentalist and creative entrepreneur who has built an unmistakable identity around one material many people overlook: scrap metal. Known for his distinctive synergetic metal sculpting, Popoola transforms discarded automotive and industrial parts into monumental, hyper-realistic sculptures, turning what would ordinarily be considered waste into works of art, cultural expression and environmental commentary. Born in Lagos in 1981, he developed his artistic foundation through studies at Auchi Polytechnic and Obafemi Awolowo University, where he specialised in sculpture and painting. Today, he is the founder of the Scrap Art Museum in Ile-Ife and Reclaimed Beauty, platforms through which he continues to explore the relationship between creativity, sustainability and African identity.

Popoola’s artistic philosophy is built around transformation. His practice repurposes materials including car parts, shock absorbers, motorcycle components, bolts, pipes, kitchen utensils and other discarded metal into animals, human figures and large-scale installations. His approach has earned him the distinctive reputation of being the “Welder of the Federal Republic”, while his work has become increasingly associated with environmental consciousness and the creative possibilities of recycling. Rather than simply reproducing objects, Popoola uses scrap to tell stories about African culture, beauty, resilience and society. His work has been exhibited at ART X Lagos, while his 2018 solo exhibition Irin Ajo (Journey) at Signature Beyond Art Gallery in Lagos featured about 24 metal sculptures and became an important milestone in the development of his neo-metal practice.

His influence has since expanded beyond Nigeria. Popoola’s exhibitions and artworks have travelled across Africa, Europe, North America and the Middle East, including appearances and exhibitions in Bahrain, London, Turkey, the United States, Canada, Morocco, Senegal, Dubai, Qatar, India, Ghana and Azerbaijan. His seventh solo exhibition, Reclaimed Beauty, opened at the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan, in December 2024, while its eighth edition, Reclaimed Beauty: A Dialogue Between Continents, opened in Abuja in June 2026 with 25 original sculptures and installations. The 2026 exhibition further demonstrates the scale of his practice, bringing together recycled metal, cultural symbolism and environmental advocacy. He also received the AMIAF Award for Hybrid Sculptor in 2024, adding formal recognition to an artistic career that has increasingly gained international attention.

Beyond exhibitions, Popoola has positioned himself as an educator and mentor within the creative ecosystem. Through the Scrap Art Museum and his wider artistic practice, he has facilitated workshops for students, professionals, NGOs, healthcare institutions, hospices, orphanages and rehabilitation centres, helping introduce more people to the possibilities of creative reuse and metal art. His influence has also inspired a new generation of artists working with neo-metal sculpture. His growing portfolio includes major public and private commissions, including The Swift Ascendant, an elaborate sculpture created for Martell’s Martell on the Move campaign, demonstrating his ability to take an environmentally conscious medium into the worlds of luxury, corporate storytelling and public art.

What distinguishes Dotun Popoola is not simply his technical ability to weld metal, but his capacity to make people reconsider what they see as worthless. Through his sculptures, scrap becomes heritage, industrial waste becomes beauty, and discarded objects become vessels for stories. His journey represents a compelling intersection of art, environmental responsibility, enterprise and cultural diplomacy, positioning him among the distinctive voices shaping contemporary African sculpture. With the Scrap Art Museum serving as both a creative laboratory and a destination for art lovers, students and tourists, Popoola continues to prove that sometimes the most extraordinary art can emerge from the things society has already thrown away.
