The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, as reported by ChannelsTv and Pulse. Madagascar took the lead through Ehsan Kari in the 15th minute, briefly raising memories of the island nation’s famous 2-0 victory over Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON. Nigeria responded just before half time when George Ilenikhena marked his senior international debut with the equaliser in first half stoppage time.
Nigeria completed the comeback in the 65th minute when another debutant, Moses Usor, put the Super Eagles ahead with his first international goal. The result gave Eric Chelle’s side three points from their opening Group L fixture, while Nigeria had to navigate the match without star striker Victor Osimhen, who was unavailable because of injury. The victory also marked a significant introduction to senior international football for Ilenikhena and Usor, with both new arrivals making an immediate contribution to Nigeria’s AFCON qualification campaign.
The Super Eagles now turn their attention to their second AFCON 2027 qualifier, an away meeting with Guinea Bissau on September 29. Guinea Bissau also opened the campaign with three points after defeating Tanzania 2 0, leaving Nigeria second in Group L on goal difference after the opening round of matches. The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, with the tournament scheduled for June 19 to July 17, 2027.
